Teen Therapy in Syracuse, Utah
Is your teen under a lot of stress? Do they not seem as happy as they once did? Did they once enjoy school but are now struggling? Are they isolating? Do you worry that they're self-harming?
Most of us remember our teenage years as a mix of great fun, burgeoning freedom, and a tremendous amount of stress. Hormone levels are skyrocketing, emotions can feel out of control, and there's a growing pressure to perform academically and fit in socially. At Connections Counseling in Syracuse, Utah, we help teens and families throughout Davis County navigate what's underneath that stress.
Common Life Challenges Among Teens
- Loss — The death of a loved one (including a pet), parental separation or divorce, or a family move requiring a change of school.
- Stress — A little stress is normal and can even be motivating, but too much can cause burnout. Many teens face tremendous pressure to do well in school, hold down a job, and be accepted by peers.
- Violence — Teens bullied at school or at home often suffer alone; if not addressed, the aftermath can result in PTSD symptoms.
- Identity and Belonging — Questioning sexual orientation or gender identity can add real weight to the teen years, especially without a safe, affirming space to talk it through. (See our dedicated LGBTQ+ Therapy for Youth and Parents and Therapy for Questioning and LGBTQ+ Teens pages for more.)
This isn't an exhaustive list — there are countless reasons a teen might benefit from talking to someone.
Types of Therapy for Teens
There are three general approaches used with teens experiencing mental health issues, often combined by a trained therapist:
- Individual Therapy — Private, one-on-one sessions, typically using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), to help the teen connect their thoughts and feelings and understand how these impact behavior.
- Family Therapy — The teen attends therapy with parent(s) and sometimes siblings, helping the family communicate effectively and respectfully.
